Richplanet.net Letters : Email to Tesco
< Back

Forum member Dave Hall emailed Tesco with concerns about RFID chips (tracking devices) being placed in some of their products by manufacturers.

Dave has allowed us to publish his email and the Tesco response.

We will be updating this page with further correspondance as and when we get it.

Dear Customer Services,

This is probably not the sort of letter that you get, but what I have read I think is very important.

As the attached article states, TESCO are one of the firms that are using this form of micro chipping, I.E. Gillette Razors etc.And at this point in time who knows what else. So I have a couple of questions for you. Do you think that this form of chipping is right?

Is it LEGAL? - Could you please let me know what products are now chipped?

And finally. What products do you intend to chip in the future?

I look forward to your reply, I am sure that you at customer services were not aware that this was happening.

So is probably just as much a shock to you, as it was to me.

Thank you in anticipation.
Mr.D.Hall

Dear Mr Hall,

Iím sorry for the delay in responding to your query about RFID. We try to respond to our customersí queries in a timely manner and I apologise that this has not happened on this occasion.

Thank you for drawing my attention to the web article about Radio Frequency Identification. I can understand you concern if what the article says is correct. It is not something that I was aware of and this does not appear to be something that has been asked before. It is very unlikely therefore that this has been put into operation in our network certainly in the UK.

I've passed your query to our technical team to look into. I'll get back in touch as soon as I have any information about this for you.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us at customer.service@tesco.co.uk quoting TES6662373X.

Kind Regards

Reply from TESCO on 8/8/2009

Dear David,

I'm sorry I have not been back in touch before this. I passed on the details as I said I would but I have not had any reply as yet. I appreciate that you had everyone's interests in mind when you brought this matter to my attention.

I have escalated the enquiry to a higher level as no-one in our general section seems to have any knowledge of the matter. This suggests that it it not in use in any of our stores as they are kept appraised of all the changes like this. The chips may be in products in our stores but we do not appear to be making any use of them as yet.

I've kept a note of your details and I will get in touch once I find out more about this for you.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us at customer.service@tesco.co.uk quoting ********.

Kind Regards
